BPH

What is BPH?

Commonly referred to as an enlarged prostate, BPH affects nearly all men at some point during their lives. Men over the age of 50 have a 50% chance of developing BPH, and the risk increases to 90% after the age of 80.

Your prostate goes through two periods of growth during your life. The first occurs during puberty. Then, around the age of 25, your prostate begins to grow again at a slower rate that continues for the rest of your life. As your prostate grows, it can compress your urethra, leading to many disruptive symptoms.

What are the symptoms of BPH?

As your prostate grows, it can cause a variety of uncomfortable and disruptive symptoms including:

  • Frequent and urgent need to urinate, but not being able to release much liquid
  • Decreased urine stream
  • Trouble starting urination
  • Feeling like you can’t fully empty your bladder
  • Blood in your urine
  • Erectile dysfunction

If you notice any of these symptoms, make an appointment with Dr. Maymi right away. While in most cases, your symptoms will be caused by BPH, prostate cancer causes similar symptoms. You need an accurate diagnosis to get the treatment you need to restore and protect your health and well-being.

How is BPH treated?

Dr. Maymi offers medical and surgical therapies for BPH. After your initial assessment and diagnosis, he creates a customized treatment plan to relieve your symptoms and restore your health.

For example, Dr. Maymi may prescribe medicines such as alpha blockers, 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, or tadalafil to relieve your symptoms. However, if your prostate is severely enlarged or you don’t respond to medical treatments, he may suggest surgical procedures such as Rezūm or TURP.

What is Rezūm?

Rezūm System therapy is a minimally invasive transurethral needle ablation that uses steam to damage the prostate cells blocking your urethra. After the cells are damaged, your body can absorb the tissue, relieving the compression on your urethra.

Dr. Maymi offers Rezūm therapy as an outpatient procedure, and you should be able to return to your normal activities within a few days.

What is TURP?

TURP is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove parts of your prostate. Dr. Maymi uses a specially designed surgical scope to reach your prostate and an electrical wire loop to excise the part of your prostate that’s blocking your urethra.

The procedure doesn’t require an incision, and you can go home to recover after your anesthesia has worn off and you demonstrate that you’re able to urinate.
